Kyra Young, creator & owner of Kyra’s Shea Medley’s, a natural, multipurpose, and handcrafted hair and skin care company that provides 100% plant-based, vegan and cruelty-free products, believes that our presence can change the world.
“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou
Born and raised in a predominately African American community in South Central Los Angeles without enough resources or role models, Kyra says, “When we succeed, it is our duty to give that back by encouraging others to do the same. Showing your face at local schools, volunteering at community events, and simply being a visible example is powerful. If the youth in my community see more business owners, computer programmers, dentists, lawyers, and engineers that look like them, I believe they will aspire to be those things too. We can encourage them by simply being who we are, letting them see our work and the impacts of it. It helps so much!”
Kyra’s passion and purpose is to “Love and help people.” Whenever she’s tired, stressed out, or near calling it quits, she’s reminded that it’s not just about her. She does it all for the Glory of God! Kyra believes God has blessed us ALL with gifts that are meant to be multiplied and wants his purpose in her life to reflect through her kindness, hard work, determination, and the LOVE within her. “I believe God has given me certain gifts and the only way I know how to multiply them for His Glory is to give them away through service and knowledge. I believe that is a start to making this world a better place.” Her mother and daily encouragement from loved ones and strangers continues to motivate her.
How Do You See Yourself Changing The World?
“I never believed that I could change the world…well at least not by myself. It’s like that African Proverb that says, ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’ It’s going to take a lot of people to see the change I want to see: a world where all lives have the same value. Until then, I will make sure the ones that have been stepped on, looked over, unrepresented, and devalued, get any services, knowledge and contributions I can give.”
KSM Gives Back
“Through KSM Gives Back program (established July 2015), every purchase is a donation! We donate 200 jars at a time to local nonprofits recommended by our customers to help end homelessness, build better communities through leadership development, as well as uplift and empower women, youth, and people of color. To date, we have donated over 2,500 jars and are scheduled to add another 600 jars by the end of August. This is only the beginning.”
